A message from the team:
FESTIVAL MARQUEE – THE FUTURE
What a fantastic five days we all had in the Babbacombe Festival Marquee this year. We hope you all enjoyed the events as much as we did.
Once again, the marquee was dressed to perfection and Babbacombe looked stunning bathed in the amazing summer sun which finally graced the event this year. We had no idea how many people would come to Babbacombe during the Festival and were completely overwhelmed by the thousands that thronged the Downs throughout our Festival week.
Those of you who were at the Hanbury’s Music Day on Sunday will know that we made an announcement to the audience at the end of the evening that, as the organisers of the marquee events, we will be standing down from hosting a Festival Marquee in 2015. This is not to say that there will be no activities on the Downs during Babbacombe Festival, however we will not be running our usual programme.
As we’re sure you can appreciate, providing such a venue and filling it with eight separate events over five days is a huge task, the planning of which takes pretty much all year. There is also an enormous cost involved. The Babbacombe Festival Marquee enterprise is entirely non profit-making. All income brought in by ticket and bar sales pay to put on events that will help meet the costs of the marquee, electrics, lighting, fencing, security, staff, tables, chairs, running a box office, marketing and promotion, to name a few of the items on the list of expenditures. Our aim has always been to provide professional, top quality entertainment and raise as much money for charity as possible. This we have achieved with the help of those who have supported us by buying tickets and generally entering into the spirit of our fun events.
We feel that it is time to re-look at this project and assess the risks and liabilities of providing this first class entertainment venue. Therefore, after the success of this year’s event, we feel that taking a break will provide us with the time needed to consider whether Babbacombe Downs is the most suitable location for the long-term sustainability of our events.
We hope that everyone who attended any of the events this year will have some very happy memories and, should we bring the Festival Marquee back at any point in the future, we’d like to think that people would welcome it with open arms.
We fully understand that we’re not the only people who can hire a marquee and put on a selection of events and, should anyone wish to take this on for next year, we’d be only too pleased.
In the meantime, thank you to everyone who has helped make the Babbacombe Festival Marquee the success that it has become. You know who you are.
With best wishes and thanks for a fantastic June 2014,
Martyn Strange & Nicky Allen
